Fire, Wind, and Flood Disaster Restoration Firms Ignore Mold Problems, Warns Enviro Hygienist Phil Fry
"Many fire, wind, and flood water damage restoration firms spend heavily on television and other advertising to tout their expertise in disaster recovery, but they often fail to test for or properly remove and remediate the disaster-caused toxic mold growth infestations in the homes and commercial buildings they work on," cautions Phillip Fry, Certified Environmental Hygienist, Professional Industrial Hygienist, and webmaster since 1999 of the mold authority website www.moldinspector.com.
"Fire, wind, and flood water damage usually causes huge amounts of toxic mold growth, both visible and hidden inside the walls, ceilings, floors, crawl spaces, basements, attics, and heating/cooling equipment and air ducts that are often not inspected for, tested, removed and remediated by many companies that provide disaster cleanup and restoration services," explains Fry, who is also author of five mold book and a mold inspector and mold remediator through the USA and Asia since 1999.
"My disaster cleanup company does not want to deal with the complexities and difficulties of effective mold inspection, testing, and removal," recently explained a staff member of a large Michigan disaster restoration firm to Mr. Fry whose own mold inspection firm EnviroFry Upkeep Masters, LLC, frequently finds and documents very high levels of dangerous mold growth in houses and business buildings after the completion of disaster cleanup jobs by both prominent nationally-advertised disaster recovery firms and local restoration firms across the USA.
"If we don't test for mold problems before we do our work, then we don't need to test for mold after we are done," added the Michigan disaster recovery firm employee.
Many fire, wind, and water disaster cleanup firms fail to find and to get rid of dangerous, health-damaging toxic mold growth in their cleanup projects because of several factors, according to Fry.
First, because mold inspection, testing, removal, and remediation is hard to do effectively and successfully, the companies choose to ignore the existence of likely mold infestation in the houses and commercial buildings for which they provide disaster recovery and restoration services.
Second, it is much easier for companies to collect for fire, wind, and water disaster restoration from insurance companies than it is for mold growth testing and removal, which is often specifically excluded from coverage in many homeowner's insurance policies.
Third, most employees and managers of disaster recovery firms do not have the necessary training, certification, and experience to find and remove toxic mold, especially hidden mold growth, in professional and thorough ways.
