Egypt's automotive industry has experienced both failures and successes, and it is now focusing more on assembly operations than manufacturing. There are now 83 car manufacturers in Egypt, including giants like GM, BMW, Hyundai, Toyota, and Nissan, which produce their main product lines in Egypt's factories. More than 15 car assembly factories and 75 facilities in the country provide more than 75,000 job opportunities.

Egypt's automotive industry is one of the most important industries in the country and brings many economic benefits. The industry has grown from just three plants relying on mostly imported components to more than 20 businesses with more than 35 assembly lines, manufacturing thousands annually of passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks, and buses, as well as 300 factories that produce most automotive components.

However, Egypt's automotive industry is considered small and underutilized despite the country's market size, geographical location, and potential. The total production market in Egypt consisted of only 49,335 vehicles in 2004, which rose to 116,683 vehicles in 2010. By 2026, Egypt's vehicle registration is projected to drop by 0.9% annually on average, from 192,030 units in 2021 to 183,920 units.

The automotive industry in Egypt faces challenges related to its size, focus on assembly operations, competition from foreign brands, lack of infrastructure, and economic and political instability. Despite being the second-largest market in Africa and the 42nd largest in the world, the automotive industry in Egypt is considered small and underutilized. The total production market in Egypt has seen fluctuations, and vehicle registration is projected to decline in the coming years. The industry is focusing more on assembly operations rather than manufacturing, which can limit its potential for growth and innovation.

The Egyptian automotive industry has struggled to compete with foreign brands in the past, which has led to the failure of some Egyptian car manufacturers. The industry also faces challenges related to infrastructure, including inadequate roads and transportation systems. However, the automotive industry in Egypt also presents opportunities for growth and development. The creation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) offers the opportunity to accelerate the manufacture and intra-African trade of value-added products, moving from commodity. The single continental market will offer a larger market for Egyptian automotive products, which can lead to increased sales and revenue for the industry. Additionally, major manufacturers like GM, BMW, Hyundai, Toyota, and Nissan produce their main product lines in Egypt's factories, providing employment opportunities for thousands of people. The industry has also experienced growth and success in recent years, with more than 20 businesses with over 35 assembly lines, manufacturing thousands annually of passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks, and buses, as well as 300 factories that produce most automotive components.
