Kraft Foods Egypt joins 30,000 employees from 60 countries in volunteering to fight hunger
Kraft Foods employees around the world have signed up in record numbers to volunteer this week as part of Delicious Difference Week, the culmination of the company's ongoing commitment to improve communities around the world. During the third-annual week of volunteer service (Oct. 3-8, 2011), approximately 30,000 employees - 50 of whom in Egypt are donating a combined amount of 480 working hours - will roll up their sleeves to fight hunger and promote healthy lifestyles.
"We're unleashing the power of our global workforce to make a real difference in the communities where we live and work," said Chairman and CEO Irene Rosenfeld, who will work shoulder-to-shoulder with her colleagues today packing meals for families facing hunger in Chicago.
"Our employees play a vital role in their communities all year long - serving lunch at local soup kitchens, teaching children about health and nutrition, building playgrounds, planting community gardens, and in so many other ways," Rosenfeld said. "And with more than 700 volunteer events in 60 countries this year, it will undoubtedly be our biggest and most impactful week of volunteer service ever!"
"In Egypt we have partnered with the Egyptian Food Bank," said Gawad Abaza, Managing Director Kraft Foods Mashreq & Algeria. "According to the Egyptian Food Bank, 16 million Egyptians in Egypt live beneath the poverty line. Most of the Egyptian Food Bank's assistance is directed towards the needy that are incapable of make a living, including the elderly, the disabled, those with chronic diseases, widows, orphans, and single women with dependents. Therefore, as part of our social responsibility at Kraft Foods Egypt we feel that the Egyptian Food Bank is a very important cause to support."
Abaza explains that one third of Kraft Food Egypt's cadre make up the 50 volunteers to pack food boxes with a difference. "I am personally very excited to be part of this project, yesterday we formed teams to compete in packing the largest number of bags that will be donated to the Egyptian Food Bank," said Abaza. "The Egyptian Food Bank will then distribute the bags, containing items such as rice, sugar, macaroni, oil, beans and canned food, to the villages of El Housinya & Belbeis in Sharkia."
As the world's second largest food company, Gawad says it is a major priority for Kraft Foods to fight hunger and promote healthy lifestyles.
