Towards Stronger UK-Egypt relations
The appointment of the UK Ambassador Gareth Bayley to Egypt comes at a time when the UK is looking to expand to new markets other than the EU after Brexit, especially in Africa. Bayley noted that the UK sees Egypt as the gateway to this expansion in the continent.
Bayley met with Mohamed Maait, Minister of Finance to discuss cooperation and developments in business between the 2 countries; they also discussed the investment environment that would allow British businessmen to enter Egyptian market.
In January 2021, the UK-Egypt Association agreement took effect to reinforce trade between the 2 countries. The agreement governs tariff-free and liberalized trading of industrial products, agriculture, fisheries and other products. The agreement also covers political, economic, social and cultural cooperation between the UK and Egypt.
