Forget streaming, gaming is the next big thing
Netflix Games doubled
Netflix Games recorded a year-on-year increase in downloads of over 180% in 2023, with a total of 81.2 million downloads worldwide. GTA games were particularly popular, together accounting for around 17% of downloads. Netflix plans to further expand its games offering, with almost 90 new games in development.
MGM dismisses streaming
Streaming is not worth it. There are too many moving images and TikTok and Reels are competition. Also, 10% more media time goes into gaming every year. In addition to the redundancies at Twitch, Amazon has now made several hundred employees at Prime Video and MGM Studios redundant. This comes almost a year after Amazon acquired MGM for 8.5 billion dollars in 2022.
Disney+ makes cuts
Disney's streaming division is still not making a profit despite subscriber growth. Now up to 20 percent of employees are to leave the animation studio Pixar. The redundancies are part of a reorganization to produce less content and save costs. This is part of Disney's efforts to make Disney+ profitable by the end of 2024.
Google wants gaming
Gaming is booming and Google wants more of the pie. Google plans to support more real-money games (RMG) in the Play Store by allowing more types of RMG games that comply with local laws in India, Brazil and Mexico from June 2023. Expansion to other countries is planned. Google is also considering a new fee model for subscriptions and in-app purchases but has not released specific fee details.
In-game advertising is booming
More and more media usage time is going into gaming. Netflix is therefore systematically increasing its activities in this area. According to a report in "The Wall Street Journal", Netflix is now considering new ways to generate revenue from its gaming business. This also includes in-game advertising.
