Are you using outdoor advertising? Think again

Two opposing trends: on the one hand, digital out-of-home is booming, while on the other, more and more cities are resisting outdoor advertising.

Edinburgh does not want SUV advertising

Edinburgh is setting an important example in environmental protection. The city has banned advertising for particularly climate-damaging products with immediate effect. This applies in particular to advertising for SUVs, air travel and cruises as well as all companies that promote or sell fossil fuels. Electric and hydrogen vehicles are exempt from this ban.

Geneva bans billboards

The Federal Court has declared the ban on commercial billboard advertising introduced in the Geneva municipality of Vernier in 2022 to be lawful. The ban applies to all commercial posters that are visible from public property, regardless of whether they are placed on public or private property.

44 initiatives against advertising

The advertising industry is facing an increasing threat from planned advertising bans, as was demonstrated at an IAA event in Zurich's Westhive. The event was attended by around 70 people who discussed the restrictions on advertising freedom. Representatives of the industry expressed particular concern about the potential negative impact on the economy.

Night ban for advertising displays

During the gas crisis, there was a regulation from September 2022 that obliged advertisers to switch off digital advertising displays between 10 pm and 6 am. This measure serves to reduce energy consumption, which is particularly important in times of energy crisis. LED-based advertising displays are particularly affected, as they consume significantly more electricity than backlit posters. An analysis shows that these digital advertising spaces in Germany consume around 113 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, which is roughly equivalent to the annual consumption of 40,000 households.
