Egypt's battle against medicine shortages
Egypt has been grappling with a significant shortage of medicines, a crisis worsened by challenges in the pharmaceutical sector, including a foreign currency shortage that impacted production and imports. In response, the Egyptian government, led by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, has been implementing a series of measures aimed at stabilizing the market and ensuring the availability of essential medicines.
One of the primary causes of the medicine shortage is the delay in customs release of both finished medicines and raw materials necessary for pharmaceutical production. The currency crisis has made it difficult for pharmaceutical companies to secure the needed supplies, further compounding the problem. However, the Egyptian government, through the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) and in cooperation with the Unified Procurement Authority, has taken significant steps to mitigate these challenges. Efforts include streamlining customs processes and expediting the release of raw materials, which has already led to an increase in the availability of several medicines in the local market.
A key strategy in addressing the shortage is the localization of modern technology in drug manufacturing. The EDA, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, is working to digitize and mechanize the pharmaceutical industry, aligning it with international standards. This initiative not only aims to enhance the production capacity within Egypt but also to reduce dependency on imports, making the local pharmaceutical industry more resilient against future shortages.
Furthermore, the Egyptian government has made substantial financial commitments to stabilize the pharmaceutical market. An EGP 10 billion allocation has been directed to the Unified Procurement Authority, specifically to address the medicine supply issue. Additionally, Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk announced an allocation of EGP 26.7 billion to support broader health initiatives, including the increase of medicine and medical supplies.
The government’s commitment to resolving the medicine shortage is evident in these concerted efforts. By modernizing drug manufacturing technology, facilitating customs procedures, and providing significant financial support, the Egyptian authorities are working diligently to overcome the current challenges and prevent future shortages. The strides made so far suggest that the crisis could be fully resolved within the next few months, as per the assurances from the EDA.
While the situation remains critical, the proactive measures taken by the Egyptian government highlight its dedication to ensuring that essential medicines are available to those in need, reflecting a broader commitment to public health and the stability of the pharmaceutical sector.
