In a groundbreaking achievement for renewable energy in the Middle East and Africa, a consortium led by Orascom Construction has begun operations at the Ras Ghareb wind farm, Egypt's largest wind energy project. This milestone signals a major step forward in the country’s renewable energy ambitions and sets a benchmark for sustainable power generation in the region.

Exceeding Expectations: Ahead of Schedule and Beyond Targets

The Ras Ghareb wind farm commenced operations for an initial 306 MW of capacity, four months ahead of schedule. This remarkable achievement not only highlights the efficiency of the consortium's efforts but also surpasses the original contractual target by 56 MW. The rapid progress reflects the consortium's commitment to delivering on its promises and leveraging advanced technologies to accelerate project timelines.

A Collaboration of Global Expertise

The project, developed under the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, is spearheaded by Red Sea Wind Energy, a consortium of international leaders in the energy sector. Engie holds a 35% stake, with Orascom Construction contributing 25%, and Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Eurus Energy Holdings each owning 20%. This global partnership brings together a wealth of experience and resources, ensuring the project's success and adherence to world-class standards.

Orascom Construction, as a key partner, is responsible for the civil and electrical infrastructure of the wind farm, further cementing its reputation as a leader in the renewable energy sector in Egypt and beyond.

Financial Backing and Expansion Plans

The consortium recently secured financial close for an additional 150 MW expansion, which will bring the wind farm's total capacity to an impressive 650 MW. The financing for both the 500 MW phase and the 150 MW expansion was provided through a syndicate of international institutions, including the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Norinchukin Bank, Société Générale, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). This financial arrangement, supported by Nippon Export and Investment Insurance, underscores the project's global significance and robust economic foundation.

Clean Energy for Over a Million Homes

Once fully operational by the third quarter of 2025, the Ras Ghareb wind farm will generate clean energy to power over one million homes. This achievement aligns with Egypt's commitment to diversifying its energy mix and reducing its carbon footprint. The project is expected to cut carbon emissions by 1.3 million tonnes annually, making it a cornerstone of the country’s sustainability agenda.

Laying the Groundwork for Future Projects

The Ras Ghareb wind farm is just the beginning of Egypt’s larger renewable energy vision. The consortium has already been allocated land for a new 1 GW wind farm, with development activities underway. This initiative will further solidify Egypt’s position as a regional leader in renewable energy and a key player in global efforts to combat climate change.

A New Era for Renewable Energy in the Region

As the largest operational wind farm in the Middle East and Africa, the Ras Ghareb project sets a high standard for future renewable energy projects in the region. Its success highlights the power of international collaboration, cutting-edge technology, and sustainable practices in addressing the energy challenges of the future.

By advancing projects like the Ras Ghareb wind farm, Egypt is not only meeting its own energy needs but also contributing to the global transition towards clean energy. This visionary approach positions the nation as a trailblazer in the renewable energy sector, with benefits that extend far beyond its borders.
