Perchloroethylene (PERC) Market Size, Analysis, and Forecast Report: 2014 – 2020
Perchloroethylene or tetrachloroethylene also known as PERC is a colorless liquid which is chemically stable, non-flammable and has a sweet-smelling fragrance. PERC is manufactured by chloronylosis of relatively lighter hydrocarbons. It is used as a solvent in various chemicals. PERC is a chemical intermediate mainly used in refrigerants such as hyrdrofluorocarbon and hydrochlorofluorocarbons. Additionally, it is used in dry cleaning in both industrial and commercial markets. PERC along with other chlorocarbons are used as vapor degreaser in automotives, aerospace and metalworking industries. It has higher boiling point and long cleaning phase which helps to remove difficult waxes and soils from the surfaces. It is also used as an extractant for oils and fats.
Perchloroethylene was manufactured by reacting chlorine with acetylene. However, now-a-days acetylene is replaced by various feedstocks such as lighter hydrocarbons and ethylene dichloride (EDC). Ethylene dichloride is the most favored feedstock due to its easier availability and higher yields. Ethylene dichloride is treated with oxygen and chlorine in bed reactor, a process known as oxychlorination resulting in the formation of PERC. In certain cases, lighter hydrocarbons such as ethane are mostly preferred as raw materials. Sometimes, perchloroethylene is also manufactured using wastes such as chlorinated hydrocarbons.

The market for perchloroethylene was mainly driven by air-conditioning and refrigeration market. Perchloroethylene is majorly used in manufacturing of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC). HFC is used as a substitute to chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants. HFC is preferred as a refrigerant due to its lower impact on ozone depletion. PERC also finds application in paints and coatings, aerosols, printing inks, engine cleaners and solvent for silicon lubricants. PERC is used as a solvent due to its characteristics such as non-flammability and stability. However, recycling issues and substitutes related perchloroethylene can act as a major restraint for the market in upcoming years.
In terms of demand, Asia Pacific was the leading region in perchloroethylene market. Growing demand of perc from refrigerant and solvent market has been the major driver for the growth in the market. India and China are the major consumers of PERC in Asia Pacific region. Asia Pacific was followed by North America where the demand for PERC is more form refrigerant market. Additionally, increasing vapor degreasing activities in aerospace and automotive sector have been driving the market in this region. U.S. is the leading country in the North America region. However, the demand for PERC in dry cleaning market is likely to decline in the U.S. owing to stringent regulations and legislation.

European market is likely to be growing market for perchloroethylene in upcoming years. However, there is decline in the market for PERC as a solvent due to Solvent Emission Directive implemented by European Union. The Rest of the World market is expected to show stable growth for perchloroethylene in next few years. The demand for PERC is likely to grow in Latin America and the Middle East due to rising refrigerant market.
