Global Surgical Glue Market

Surgical glues which is also known as surgical adhesives or sealants, is generally used as a piece of medicinal guide so as to hold a wrap or other dressing onto damage. Surgical sealants and adhesives are being utilized in preventing fluid loss and in facilitating the wound closures through the surface or joints or openings in materials. These are mainly known by their characteristics such as less pain and traumatic closure, fast application, no suture removal, and good cosmetic result. The five main types of surgical glues are fibrin sealants,

cyanoacrylates, glutaraldehyde glues, hydrogels, and collagen based compounds. However, scientists in the U.S. have recently created highly elastic surgical glue that can quickly seal even the toughest wounds in seconds without stitches or staples. The new glue known as MeTro seals the wound and sets in 60 seconds once treated with UV light.

Surgical glue is widely used in numerous surgical procedures related to the area such as central nervous system, general surgery, urology, cosmetic surgery, orthopedic surgery, pulmonary surgery and many others due to their helping factor such as easy to use, faster implementation, minimizes the risk of infections and many more. It has increased its concern in respect to reduce surgical wounds by introducing more research and development activities related to it. Recently, extensive research endeavors have made to build flexible, biocompatible and biodegradable sealants for the formation of leak-free closures in delicate and soft tissues. Hence the sealants materials are required to be more elastic and consistent to allow normal function and movement of flexible tissues such as skin, lungs, heart tissues and blood vessel. According to International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery ( (ISAPS), in 2017, USA, Brazil, Japan, Italy and Mexico accounts 41.4% of the world’s cosmetic procedures, followed by Russia, India, Turkey, Germany and France.

FACTORS DRIVING GROWTH IN THE GLOBAL SURGICAL GLUE MARKET

Blood loss occurs due to different surgeries, accidents, internal causes and many more due to which it increases the demand for managing blood loss. Surgical sealants and adhesives are used to prevent blood loss and in facilitating the wound closures through the surface or joints or openings in materials, along with less painful operation without the need of removal. Earlier in order to control bleeding during operations, traditional method (stiches and staples) were mostly used, which involved more time in healing, high risk of infection, and difficult to use in some of the surgical location. The application of sealants and adhesives helps in good closure capabilities, avoid complications as well as can be implemented faster and prevent both intraoperative and post-operative decrease in hemoglobin. Fibrin sealants composed of thrombin and fibrinogen are just applied as a patch or sprayed on the bleeding surface. Fibrin and synthetic adhesives can be used on both external and internal bleeding whereas; polysaccharide-based is approved for external bleeding. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), in May, 2012, fibrin tissue adhesive has helped in reducing the blood loss after the surgery and risk of complication whereas, in September 2015, thrombin fibrin sealant named Quixil has helped the patients in reducing the blood loss in the hip arthroplasty.

According to Association for Safe International Road Travel ( ASIRT), each year nearly 1.3 million people die due to road crashes, on an average of 3,287 deaths per day and around 20-50 million gets injured or gets disabled.
FDA and CE mark approvals of surgical glue products

Regulatory agencies and organizations play a vital role to meet the requirements of legal procedures related to drug development or analytical devices (e.g. test kits and analyzers) process in a country. As the pharmaceutical industries throughout the world are moving ahead towards becoming highly competitive, regulatory agencies are being established in various countries across the globe. One of the factor which is driving the growth of the surgical sealant and adhesives market is the easily adoption of sealants and adhesive products due to the FDA and CE Marking approval in the U.S. and Europe. With the help of these approvals it increases the acceptance of the product in the market and is very useful for authorized medical device manufacturers for securing the approvals as well as maintaining the regulatory compliance. For instance, in October, 2016, FDA approved an expanded indication of Ethicon for EVARREST Fibrin Sealant Patch, which leverages biologics rapidly and stops problematic bleeding while surgery. In July, 2016, FDA gave an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval to start the clinical trials of Sylys in U.S. which has helped them in reducing the incidence of anastomotic leaks and their devastating impact.
