Egypt security forces accidentally kill 7 mexican tourists
A joint police and army force was chasing “terrorist elements” on Sunday when they “wrongfully dealt” with four, 4-wheel drive vehicles carrying the Mexican tourists, the interior ministry said in a statement. Ten people were wounded, including Mexicans and Egyptians, it said. Yasser El-Tallawi, first attorney general of South Giza prosecution, said by phone that seven Mexicans had died. One American was among the injured, he said.
The tourists were in a restricted area without permission and hadn’t informed authorities of their trip, Rasha el-Azayzi, a spokeswoman for the Egyptian Tourism Ministry, told state-run Middle East News Agency, citing initial information. The group was attacked from the air, Mexican Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu said Monday morning at a press conference in Mexico City.
