Egypt elected to 40-member council of International Maritime Organization
Egypt was one of 40 countries elected to serve on the council of the International Maritime Organization from 2020 to 2021, in elections held over the past week and concluded on Friday.
The council includes ten “category a” countries, which “have the largest interest in providing international shipping services” and ten “category b” countries which “have the largest interest in international seaborne trade” according to a press release.
Category c includes “states that have special interests in maritime transport or navigation and whose election to the council will ensure the representation of all major geographic areas of the world.”
Egypt is in category c, along with the Bahamas, Belgium, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey.
