Egypt to sell trains tickets to foreigners in Dollar, Euro
Egypt's Minister of Transport Kamel Al-Wazir confirmed that the collection of train tickets for foreigner will be in dollars and euros, starting from next month.
During a call-in with TV anchor Amr Adib, the minister said: “The Ministry of Transport’s dealings with dollars contributes to providing foreign currency, whether euros or dollars, prevents tourists from resorting to exchanging currencies from the parallel or black market.”
He added, “There is a great demand for sleeping trains and their reservations in dollars and euros during the recent period, noting that there are 1023 travelers, who paid the value of train tickets in foreign currency during the past days.
He continued: “Foreign citizens will be given an opportunity until the end of this month to start implementing the new decision.”
Earlier, Al-Wazir said that each train trip cost around EGP 26,000, and the authority before adopting the ticket gates used to receive only EGP 6,000 from each trip, yet, after adopting the new system the figure improved to about EGP 10,000.
