Japan loans Egypt $306m towards cost of line 4 of Cairo metro
A loan of up to $306 million has been approved by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to finance a portion of Cairo Metro Line 4.
The funds will be used for the project's first phase, a 19-kilometer route connecting the city centre with the Great Egyptian Museum and the Giza Pyramids.
Japanese systems and trains will be used as part of the official development aid loan, which has a 40-year repayment horizon.
The public is expected to be able to use the line by February 2028. Initial construction and consultancy contracts have already been put out to bid.
