The African Space Agency’s headquarters is set to make a landing In Egypt’s New Cairo
Planned to be built on the outskirts of New Cairo, the headquarters for the African Space Agency is set to be constructed in Egypt. The idea was first proposed way back in 2019, during the African Union Summit when members of the African Union signed an agreement for the construction of the building. Recently, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Ayman Ashuor also signed an agreement to begin its construction phase.
Such a prominent building will bring together space researchers and explorers from all over Africa and according to Ashour will act as a gateway for innovation, research and technological education in the continent. With this new project, Egypt as well as many other African countries will be able to actively undergo space research as well as a wide array of projects.
Beyond the African Space Agency, Egypt has been taking big steps towards participating in the field of space with many key space-related events taking place during these past two years. Just last summer, astronaut Sara Sabry became the first Egyptian to travel on a suborbital flight after she joined five others on New Shepard’s 22nd space flight (NS-22). With it being 2023, we are expecting even more exciting projects throughout the upcoming year.
