SCZone Announces Completing 72% of Sokhna Port Development Work
The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) announced concluding about 72% of the development work for the port of Sokhna, with the entry of sea water into the new basins.
SCZone explained in a statement that the development work of the Sokhna port aims to transform the port into a pivotal one that serves the global trade movement across the Red Sea, as well as opening new markets for Egyptian exports through the operation of direct navigation services and increasing competitiveness.
The port will developing integrated solutions for transport and trading between container terminals, railway stations and intermodal transport services, in addition it promotes green hydrogen projects.
The development plan includes the implementation of the construction of 4 basins beside the old basins "2,1", where the fourth basin includes the activities of a container terminal and a general commodity terminal, and the extension of the second basin was allocated for the purposes of Ro-Ro berths, a passenger terminal, and a container terminal.
The SCZone confirmed that the area of the new berths is about 18 km long and 18 meters deep to allow the reception of giant ships and the establishment of trading yards with an area of 5.6 million square meters, in addition to commercial and logistical areas with an area of 5.3 km2; served by a network of railways with a length of 33 km connected to the Sokhna - Marsa Matruh electric train.
The development plan also includes an arterial road with a length of approximately 14 km to connect the berths and the port, in addition to the construction of a breakwater with a length of 1050 meters.
