Supply Ministry Reveals Size of Strategic Commodities Stockpile

Ali Al-Moselhi, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade revealed the position of the strategic stock and balances of all basic food commodities, within the framework of advance planning to preserve the strategic stock despite the repercussions of of the global crisis.


This came during the Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly's meeting with the minister of Supply today to check on the availability of basic commodity balances.


Al-Moselhi reviewed the strategic stockpile of wheat, sugar, corn, oil and rice, in addition to frozen meat and poultry, stressing that the strategic reserve of various basic commodities is reassuring, with these commodities continuing at discounts from 20% to 30% at the ministry’s outlets and “Ahlan Ramadan” exhibitions, according to a statement issued by the Cabinet.


The minister presented a report on the available stock of a number of strategic commodities, and in this regard, he explained that with regard to the stock of wheat, its stock is sufficient for the need of local consumption for a period of 2.3 months, noting that the season for supplying local wheat will start from this month.


He pointed out that the stock of rice is enough for about 3.5 months, and there are quantities that have been contracted, and the stock of sugar covers 4 months, while oil suffices the needs of the market for about 4.3 months, and pasta for a period of 7.5 months.


On his part, the PM reaffirmed the necessity of preserving the state's strategic stock of main food commoditiess, as well as maximizing the added value of storing commodities from the series of strategic silos that were established throughout the republic, with the aim of maintaining the stability of the state's food security position by meeting the needs of citizens in appropriate quantities.
