Gov't Denies Intention to Raise Subsidized Bread Price Next Month
The government has monitored news that has spread on some websites and social media pages regarding the issuance of a decision to raise the price of a subsidized loaf of bread, starting from next month.
The Cabinets Media Center stated in an official statement that it had communicated with the Ministry of Supply and denied these reports, stressing that there is no truth to raising the price of a subsidized loaf of bread starting from next month.
The ministry confirmed that no decisions have been issued in this regard, stressing the continuation of the system of disbursing the subsidized loaf of bread to citizens on ration cards with only 5 piastres without any increases, and it is the system that benefits 71 million citizens, provided that the state bears the difference in the production cost.
It noted the launch of periodic monitoring campaigns on all bakeries, to ensure that the bread conforms to all quality standards, with the application of penalties and fines for violators.
In a related context, she mentioned that the price of a subsidized loaf of bread was fixed at 5 piasters, despite the increase in the production cost, and the total number of beneficiaries of ration cards nationwide reached about 64 million citizens at a cost of 36 billion pounds annually, equivalent to 3 billion pounds per month.
