Egypt converted over half a million vehicles to run on natural gas

In line with its 2030 vision and UN SDGs, Egypt launched the 2014 Aging Vehicle Replacement Initiative to reduce fuel imports, decrease harmful emissions, and ensure road safety.

By April, Egypt had already converted 500,000 vehicles.

The expansion of natural gas refuelling stations has played a crucial role in attracting attention to the initiative, with the operational stations increasing from 61 to 910 only during this period.

The statement also noted that the number of conversion centres has grown to 130 by the end of the fiscal year 2022/2023.

In March 2023, Egypt inaugurated its first mobile centre for converting vehicles, capable of converting up to 20 units per day.

Natural Gas at Homes

Meanwhile, Egypt has provided 14.2 million housing units with natural gas nationwide since the beginning of the Egyptian delivery project in 1980, the ministry's statement noted.

Over the past nine years alone, Egypt has connected 8 million housing units to the natural gas grid.

Egypt has achieved an average natural gas production rate of 6.2 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) during the fiscal year 2022/23, which concluded in June, according to the latest data released by the petroleum ministry.

According to the statement, Egypt's daily gas consumption averages 5.9 bcf/d; nearly 57 percent is used for electricity generation, 25 percent for industrial purposes, 6 percent for residential use, and 2 percent for vehicle fuel.
