Egypt escalated its position in the global citrus market in 2023 with its lemon exports reaching an unparalleled 100,000 tons that season. This information was disclosed by Amr Kadah, the export manager at HB Group. Amr emphasizes Egypt’s favorable climatic conditions which permit year-round lemon production. Different varieties of lemons are cultivated in an area spanning 35 thousand acres, primarily situated in Northern Egypt. Saudi Arabia accounts for approximately 50% of these export volumes, expressing a preference for the local Baladi variety, also known as Benzhair. This variety is widely produced in Egypt and exported fresh and dried due to its unique taste and aroma, thinner skin, and a more intense, acidic flavor than other lemon varieties. The Russian market holds the second position consuming 10,000 tonnes of Egyptian lemons. Eastern Europe, Africa, and East Asian markets prefer the Adalia and Sheairy varieties. There is increasing interest in the Bearss Lime variety, whose farms are multiplying owing to its superior quality and taste. The Egyptian citrus industry reaps the benefits of its favorable climate and fertile soil, delivering world-class lemons and oranges. With their impressive export accomplishments, they proved to be a major player in the global citrus market, contributing significantly to Egypt's economy.
