Egypt Selects Consultants for 34km Cairo Metro Line Design
Egypt's Ministry of Transport has chosen a joint venture of French consulting engineers Egis and Setec to work on the design of the second phase of Cairo Metro Line 6. Slated to run for 34 kilometers, the metro line will span the north to the south of the Cairo metropolitan area, which is home to over 22 million people. This new line aims to alleviate congestion on Line 1 and significantly enhance the system’s overall flexibility by facilitating interchange with lines 1, 3, and 4. The Egis-led team had also conducted the studies for the first phase of the line, anticipated to cost a total of around $6 billion. During the signing ceremony, Egypt’s Transport Minister Kamel El Wazir emphasized that the project was envisioned to “transform Cairo’s urban mobility”. Highlighting the importance of the partnership between Egypt and France, he stated that the country takes immense pride in this collaboration. The French government has pledged its support for the venture, agreeing to aid in financing preconstruction work on the line. Egis, with its widespread operations in 120 countries and a formidable team of around 18,000 employees, has already completed more than 700 projects across eight Middle Eastern countries. This ambitious project aligns with Egypt’s vision to modernize its public transport system. It would significantly contribute to reducing traffic congestion, improving commute times, and boosting the overall quality of life for Cairo’s residents.
