Egypt Rises as Third Largest Carrot Supplier to EU
This year, Egypt has elevated its position in global markets as it emerges as the third largest supplier of carrots to the European Union (EU). According to the farming year 2022/23 results, there was a notable increase in the export of Egyptian carrots to the EU. Egypt successfully delivered a total of 12,000 tons of carrots to various EU markets from July 2022 to June 2023. This achievement marks a historical bloom in Egyptian exports and shows commercial growth being 33 times higher compared to the previous season and nearly seven-fold greater than the last peak season in 2018/19. The rise in Egyptian exports was primarily due to the increased import demands in the EU following significant issues with local harvests. For instance, Poland reported an 8% decrease in carrot harvests in 2022. At the same time, Poland became the fourth largest importer despite being out of the EU zone, having imported 11,600 tons of carrots. Combined results show a whopping 126,000 tons of carrots were imported into EU nations from countries outside the EU in the 2022/23 season. This is two and a half times more compared to the period from July 2021 to June 2022. Top importers among EU countries were Romania, the Netherlands, and Bulgaria.
