The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) has been given the green light by the Egyptian government to proceed with an electricity export project, under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) agreed with Belgium’s Jan De Nul. The Belgian company and EETC are set to begin research on a proposal to export electricity generated from renewable energy in Egypt to nations in Europe via a transmission line under the Mediterranean Sea. The endorsement for the project was announced during Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly’s visit to Brussels to participate in the EU’s Global Gateway Forum on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi. The project is considered strategic for both Egypt and Europe. Madbouly has expressed Egypt's eagerness to work with the company in carrying out the project and disclosed Egypt's ambitious plans to extend marine electricity transmission lines to multiple European countries, as part of ongoing discussions. Egypt's participation in the EU's Global Gateway Forum is aimed at discussing the world's investment needs, providing solutions, and securing new deals. Key discussion areas include investments in green energy and hydrogen, research and education, critical raw materials, and transport corridors.
