The Egyptian government wants to improve wastewater services in the governorate of Alexandria, and is counting on a new wastewater treatment plant. The Kafr Abu Zohr plant will be built by the Egyptian company Elsewedy Electric Environmental Solutions.

Cairo-based Elsewedy Electric Environmental Solutions will implement the Kafr Abu Zohr wastewater treatment plant project in the governorate of Alexandria, under an agreement signed recently with Egypt’s Construction Authority for Drinking Water and Wastewater (CAPW). The contract covers the design, supply of equipment, installation, civil engineering works and turnkey commissioning of the wastewater treatment plant.

The plant will treat 60,000 m3 of effluent produced in the Alexandria governorate every day, before returning it to the natural environment. The aim of this project is to protect the environment, particularly freshwater resources, which are currently polluted by wastewater, posing risks to aquatic biodiversity and human health.

Investment in wastewater treatment

Elsewedy Electric has won the contract for the Kafr Abu Zohr wastewater treatment plant, less than three years after signing the contract for the Houd Negaih wastewater treatment plant in the governorate of Al Sharkia, in north-east Egypt. Built as part of the Sustainable Rural Sanitation Services Programme (SRSSP), this plant will have a capacity of 6,000 m3 per day when commissioned. Through the SRSSP, the Egyptian government’s overall aim is to improve liquid sanitation in 769 villages, spread across seven of the 26 governorates in the country of the pharaohs.
