Egypt wheat reserve sufficient for nearly 6 months
Egypt had collected 3.5 million tons of wheat during the 2024 wheat supply season.
Egypt’s wheat imports rose by over 14.5 percent to 11 million tons in 2023 compared to 9.6 million tons in 2022.
In June, the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) signed contracts to import 470,000 tons of Russian, Bulgarian, Romanian, and Ukrainian wheat through an international tender.
Farouk added that Egypt’s strategic reserve of oils is sufficient for 6.4 months, that of subsidized sugar for 16.3 months, that of fresh meat for 7.8 months, and that of frozen poultry for 10.4 months.
Egypt had suffered from a sugar crisis at the end of 2023 and the start of 2024 which was resolved mainly after an agreement to import 250,000 tons of raw sugar and raise the amount of subsidized sugar in the market.
