Dubai-based renewables developer and operator AMEA Power has signed capacity purchase agreements (CPAs) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to develop two battery energy storage facilities with a combined capacity of 1,500 MWh.

The CPAs, which were signed at a ceremony on Sunday, concern a 500-MWh facility in Zafarana and a 1,000-MWh site in Benban. AMEA Power will build the two battery energy storage systems (BESS) along with the required substations and grid connections.

“The agreement supports Egypt’s strategy to expand renewable energy integration and reduce dependence on fossil fuels,” a press statement from the government says.

The selection of storage sites was coordinated between the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) and EETC, and aligns with Egypt’s renewable energy development plan which targets an increase of renewable energy’s share in the electricity mix to 42% by 2030 and 65% by 2040.

“Egypt continues to be a strategic market for us as we continue to develop and deliver renewable energy projects that support the country’s transition to a sustainable future,” the company said in a social media post.
