Egypt to lease German floating regasification units soon
Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, discussed the possibility of Egypt utilizing Germany’s surplus regasification capacities, aiming to enhance energy collaboration between the two nations. The proposal includes renting one of Germany’s floating regasification units, currently stationed at Mukran Port on the Baltic Sea. To move forward with this arrangement, both sides agreed to organize a visit for an Egyptian delegation of specialists to Germany by the end of the month to finalize contractual terms.
This discussion took place during a meeting with Philipp Steinberg, Director-General for Economic Stabilization, Energy Security, and Gas and Hydrogen Infrastructure at the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. One of the key topics on the agenda was Germany’s potential purchase of Cypriot gas, following the recently signed agreement between Egypt and Cyprus. Under this agreement, natural gas from Cypriot fields will be transported to Egypt, where it will be processed through Egypt’s liquefaction facilities, further cementing Egypt’s position as a regional energy hub.
In addition to natural gas cooperation, the talks also focused on strengthening collaboration in the hydrogen sector. Given Germany’s expertise in hydrogen projects and Egypt’s growing potential in green hydrogen production, both parties explored ways to enhance technology exchange and knowledge transfer. This partnership aims to leverage Egypt’s renewable energy capabilities to accelerate hydrogen development and align with global sustainability efforts.
The discussions extended to carbon storage, trading, and distribution, with both sides reviewing standards and regulations governing carbon markets. By expanding cooperation in this area, Egypt and Germany seek to advance sustainable energy solutions and support global efforts toward a lower-carbon future.
This meeting underscores the deepening energy partnership between Egypt and Germany, highlighting opportunities for collaboration in gas infrastructure, hydrogen development, and carbon market innovation, while reinforcing Egypt’s strategic role in the global energy landscape.
