In 2010, the Egyptian government intorduced a new taxation systme for tobacco, which resulted in the retail price of cigarettes increasing by 40% and that of smoking tobacco increasing by 100%. However, the population of adult smokers continued to grow, due to a lack of access to information relating to the harmful effects of smoking, particularly in rural and suburban areas of the country.
