Egypt takes third place in Microsoft's Imagine Cup
Microsoft’s annual Imagine Cup has been running a good number of years, and the aim of the international competition is to pit students against each other in three different technological categories. Through a series of local and regional competitions, only the best student in the world are selected to further develop, refine and present their unique Windows-based solution at the finals – this year held at Microsoft’s Seattle head office.
While Africa had far less representation than last year, at least one team managed to make home a prize. Egypt’s Team Illogic competed in the Games category, and on Saturday they walked away with third place and a tidy sum of $5 000 in prize money.
They developed a Windows Phone 8 physics puzzle game called ‘Puppy in Bubble’ and, according to the Microsoft website, it’s about Spout, a naughty puppy that likes getting lost from his owner Adam.
Nigeria’s Team High Rise and Uganda’s Team mDex competed in the World Citizen category, but failed to make an impact on the judges. Last year Team Code 8 from Uganda walked away with the Women’s Empowerment Award, together with a cheque for $12 000.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella served as one of the many judges, and only had praise for this year’s entries.
