Egypt converted 50,000 cars to bi-fuel models in first 9 months of FY2022/23

In the same period, around nine new car conversion centres were opened, bringing the total number of centres to 130 countrywide.

In January 2021, then-Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea unveiled plans to convert 150,000 vehicles to run on natural gas, in addition to scrapping 250,000 rickety cars and replacing them with bi-fuel models in three years.

Since the launch of the initiative in 2014, a total of 500,000 cars have been fitted to run on the new model.

Between July 2022 and the end of March 2023, 61 natural gas fuelling stations were built, bringing the country’s total to 688. An additional 221 stations are projected to open in the near future, with 1,000 total planned.

Furthermore, data released by the Ministry of Petroleum showed that natural gas sales soared 26 percent year-on-year to 930 million cubic metres in the same period.

Egypt expects to produce about eight million tons of liquified natural gas (LNG) in 2023 after the discovery of a new gas field in the Eastern Mediterranean in the Narges area in January.

The country's LNG exports increased by 14 percent year-on-year to 7.5 million tons in 2022.
