Egypt’s population growth declines by 8 percent in 2023

Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics announced that the population growth in 2023 decreased by 8 percent compared to 2022. In addition, it stated that Egypt’s population reached 105.858 million on January 1, 2024, compared to 104.395 million million during the same period last year.

The agency attributed the decline in Egypt’s population growth to the decrease in the number of births in 2023 compared to 2022. The number of births in 2023, according to preliminary data, reached 2.044 million. That is compared to 2.93 million in 2022 which is a decrease of about 149,000.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi launched the National Project for Development of the Egyptian Family in February 2022. The program aims to improve education, health, economic empowerment, and culture. It also aims to control population growth in Egypt.

Global birth rates

The world population recorded 8.05 billion on 1 July 2023. Some 1.28 billion of the world’s population live in more developed countries which include Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.
