The Egyptian Ministry of Transportation announced on Thursday that it was raising metro and train ticket prices, effective August 1st, in line with the government’s aim to abolish subsidies of several public services and reduce public expenditures.
Metro tickets are now priced as follows:
A metro ride of one to nine stops increased from LE 6 to LE 8.
Between 10 to 16 stops increased from 8 LE to LE 10.
Between 17 to 23 stops, prices climbed from LE 12 to LE 15.
Those journeying for more than 23 stops will now pay LE 20 instead of LE 15.
The latest prices come soon after a 10-15 percent increase in ticket prices for buses, microbuses, and taxis announced earlier on Thursday.

Earlier this week during a press conference, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly emphasized the importance of reducing subsidies and the government’s intention to up prices of numerous services in the coming period.
Subsidized bread prices were increased by 300 percent in May following the announcement of a surge in internet line and mobile network prices.
