In 2024, ChatGPT has increasingly taken on an important role as a traffic source for various websites, reports Semrush on Search Engine Land. Websites in the education, technology, and software development sectors in particular benefit from increased traffic generated by interactions with ChatGPT. This change in digital behavior shows that ChatGPT not only represents a new method of retrieving information but also drives traffic to over 30,000 different domains. The report highlights that ChatGPT can now be a larger source of traffic than classic search engines like Google and Bing, especially for specific content, such as OpenAI-related pages and technical or academic resources.

One notable trend that Semrush reveals is the difference in search intent of ChatGPT users compared to traditional search engine queries. While traditional search engine queries usually have a clear intent, such as information search or transactions, about 70% of queries on ChatGPT deviate from these classic categories. This deviation presents new challenges for companies as they must adapt their content to be optimized not only for traditional search engines but also for this new type of information query.
