Austrian Airlines Traffic Result for May 2011: 1.1 Percent Increase in Passenger Volume in May

Slight passenger increase despite the effects of the crises in Japan and Middle East

Austrian Airlines carried 1,027,800 passengers in May 2011. Therewith Austrian Airlines has achieved a slight passenger increase of 1.1 percent in comparison to May last year despite the effects of the crises in Japan and Middle East. The average passenger load factor, at 71.9 percent, was 2.5 percentage points below the figure for the same month last year. The capacity measured in available seat kilometers (ASK) rose by 4.7 percent. The figure for revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) rose by 1.2 percent.

In the period from January to May 2011, the number of passengers carried, which is over four million, was 2.7 percent above the previous year’s figure. The load factor fell by 3.4 percentage points to 69.8 percent. The capacity measured in available seat kilometers (ASK) rose by 4.0 percent. The figure for revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) fell by 0.8 percent.

The Members of the Austrian Airlines Executive Board, Andreas Bierwirth and Peter Malanik said the following: “We feel the effects of the crises in Japan and in the Middle East, but we are going against it.”

Europe
In May 2011, around 840,700 passengers flew with Austrian Airlines within Europe. This is 2.9 percent more passengers than last year. The load factor rose by 1.1 percentage points to 73.2 percent. Austrian Airlines increased the ASK by 1.6 percent, the RPK rose by 3.2 percent.

In the period from January to May 2011, around 3.3 million passengers flew with Austrian Airlines within Europe. This is 4.9 percent more passengers than last year. The load factor rose by 1.8 percentage points to 67.3 percent. The figure for ASK rose by 2.6 percent, and the one for RPK by 5.5 percent.

Intercontinental
In May 2011, the number of passengers carried on intercontinental flights fell by 4.7 percent to 138,900. The load factor, which is 71.7 percent, was 5.8 percentage points below the figure of the previous year. The crises in Japan and Middle East are having an effect here. Austrian Airlines increased its ASK by 9.1 percent. The figure for RPK rose by 0.9 percent.

Austrian Airlines carried 630,500 passengers in the period from January to May 2011, or 0.9 percent less than last year. The load factor fell by 8.2 percentage points to 71.7 percent. Austrian Airlines increased its ASK by 10.1 percent. The figure for RPK fell by 1.3 percent.

Charter
As a result of the capacity restriction set by the EU, Austrian Airlines reduced its ASK in the charter business segment.

In May 2011, passenger volume stood at 48,200, which is 10.8 percent less than the previous year. The load factor fell by 4.4 percentage points to 63.7 percent. Austrian Airlines reduced its ASK by 6.4 percent. The figure for RPK fell by 12.5 percent.

In the period from January to May 2011, Austrian Airlines carried 157.300 passengers in the Charter segment. This figure is 19.6 percent lower than last year. The load factor fell by 2.7 percentage points to 71.2 percent. The figure for ASK fell by 32.4 percent, while the one for RPK fell by 34.8 percent.
